I’m thrilled to welcome you back to the Centaurian Substack as we usher in a new era of human-machine symbiosis. After a brief pause, subscriptions are now reactivated—and with them, a renewed commitment to exploring the intersection of AI, human cognition, and purposeful innovation.
Over the past year, we’ve taken significant steps toward realizing the vision J. C. R. Licklider laid out decades ago: a future where humans and machines think together as never before. We’ve also embarked on the inaugural Centaurian Christmas Lectures, released free on YouTube, offering a deep dive into how we might partner with AI to augment our collective intelligence. 1. Principia Centauri
The Centaurian Manifesto: Envisioning a Future Fueled by Human-Machine Symbiosis
In this inaugural manifesto, I revisited Licklider’s 1960 prophecy that humans and computing machines would be “coupled together very tightly,” ushering in unprecedented forms of thinking. We explored how each major shift—from my first lines of code at age nine, to the dawn of smartphones—brought us closer to genuine cognitive partnership with technology.

We’ve long externalized our thoughts, from cave paintings to computers. True symbiosis emerges when AI enables more than automation—it becomes a bicycle for the mind, or as I like to think of it, an Iron Man suit for our thinking.
2. Thinking with Machines
Fostering a World Where Technology Enhances Human Capabilities
Building on Daniel Kahneman’s Thinking, Fast and Slow, I introduced an extended framework that goes beyond our usual notions of System 1 (unconscious) and System 2 (conscious) thinking. By adding System Zero (Extended Minds), System Three (AI), and System X (Collective Intelligence), we can better visualize how each “system” interweaves.
Key Takeaway
System Zero: Our capacity to think outside our brains (e.g., writing, whiteboards, or any external medium).
System One: Our 11-million-bits-a-second unconscious supercomputer.
System Two: Deliberate, conscious reasoning (the 50-bits-per-second bottleneck).
System Three: AI as an active, intelligent participant.
System X: The collective synergy of humans and machines together.
3. Is This Creativity’s Alpha Zero Moment?
Unpacking Ethan Mollick’s Assertion of GenAI’s Creative Supremacy
In one of our most debated articles, I responded to Ethan Mollick’s claim that GPT-4 can surpass human ideation. By reframing creativity as combinatory play (in Einstein’s sense) and harnessing our unconscious (System 1), we see that real breakthrough ideas come from divergent association, not mere surface-level brainstorming.
Key Takeaway
Generative AI raises the floor of creativity by handling simple associations incredibly well. But to truly innovate, we must combine human superpowers—like deep domain expertise, incubation, and diverse mental models—with AI’s speed and breadth. Together, we become what Garry Kasparov called Centaurians—human + machine, with a better process.
4. 14,000,605 AI Futures
MCU, Chess Grandmasters, and the Blurred Line Between Technology and Magic
Here, I linked Dr. Strange’s “14,000,605 possible futures” to how our brains predict the world. Like chess grandmasters who chunk information, we humans are powerful predictive engines—yet we can amplify that power with AI. Quoting Max Bennett, Jeff Hawkins, and referencing AI evolutions from Deep Blue to AlphaZero, we see how advanced algorithms can mirror (or expand) our innate pattern-recognition skills.

Intelligence—both human and artificial—thrives on prediction and pattern-recognition. The line between technology and magic thins when we consider how swiftly AI can “fill in” the future. Our challenge is to shape those futures responsibly and creatively.

If you want to explore the mind/brain as a predictive machine more, I'd recommend (if you haven't read them) Andy Clark's recent book "The experience machine" and Karl Friston's Active Inference and Free energy Principle ideas.
